The 2026–2027 Common App will officially open on August 1, marking the beginning of the Fall 2027 application cycle.

This year’s biggest headline is Georgetown University’s arrival on the platform. Meanwhile, the personal essay prompts remain unchanged, and Common App’s position on AI-generated application content remains clear.

The platform may be more convenient, but the message behind these developments is simple: do not mistake easier submission for easier admission.

Georgetown Finally Joins Common App

After two years of reviewing its admissions process, Georgetown University announced a three-year pilot programme allowing students to apply through Common App beginning in August 2026.

Until now, Georgetown was one of the few highly selective U.S. universities to maintain its own application system.

Applicants to the Class of 2031 may now choose between:

• the Georgetown Application; or
• the Common Application.

Georgetown has stated that its admissions standards will not change. The university will continue its personalised, holistic review process, regardless of which platform an applicant uses. Georgetown also continues to require SAT or ACT scores.

The practical effect, however, could be significant. With more than 1,100 institutions using Common App, removing the separate-application barrier may encourage many more students to add Georgetown to their lists.

In short: Georgetown has made applying easier—not getting in.

The Main Essay Prompts Remain Unchanged

Common App has confirmed that all seven personal essay prompts will remain the same for 2026–2027. The word limit remains 250–650 words.

This means applicants do not need to wait until August 1 to begin writing.

But choosing a prompt should not become a strategy game based on which topic appears safest or least popular. The seven prompts are simply different doors into the same room.

Admissions officers want to understand:

• how you think;
• what has shaped you;
• how you respond to difficulty;
• what genuinely interests you; and
• what you have learned about yourself and others.

The experience is the vehicle. Reflection is the destination.

Our advice is straightforward:

Choose depth over popularity.
The best prompt is the one that allows you to explore a meaningful experience honestly.

Use details instead of labels.
Do not merely say that you are resilient, curious or compassionate. Show the moment that reveals it.

Focus on growth, not trophies.
The personal essay is not an expanded activities list. What matters is not only what happened, but how it changed you.

AI Can Edit a Sentence—It Should Not Invent Your Life

Common App’s fraud policy identifies the submission of AI-generated written or oral material as potential application fraud.

That does not mean students must avoid every digital writing tool. AI may help identify grammatical errors, awkward wording or unclear sentence structure. The danger begins when it generates the central story, personal reflections or ideas and the applicant submits them as their own work.

A beautifully written essay is useless if it no longer sounds like the student.

AI can produce perfect grammar. It can also produce a dramatic childhood memory involving a grandmother, a bowl of soup and a life-changing realisation—even if none of these things ever happened.

Applicants should follow one rule:

The experiences, details, ideas and reflections must belong to the student.

Students should also review the individual AI policies of each university, as institutional expectations may differ.

What Applicants Should Do Before August 1

1. Finalise a Balanced College List

Divide schools into reach, match and likely categories. Record each university’s application round, deadline, testing policy and supplemental essay requirements.

Ten to twelve carefully selected applications are usually more effective than adding schools simply because Common App makes it easy.

2. Begin the Personal Essay Now

The prompts are already available, so there is no reason to wait for the system refresh.

Choose a direction, create an outline and allow time for at least two meaningful rounds of revision. A strong essay usually develops through reflection—not through one heroic all-nighter on October 31.

3. Speak to Recommenders Early

Teachers receive many recommendation requests once school begins. Ask early and provide useful information, including specific classroom moments, projects and examples of growth.

A helpful recommendation tells a story. “She is hardworking and responsible” may be true, but it is unlikely to remain in an admissions officer’s memory.

4. Prepare Your Account

Common App accounts roll over each year, and some existing information can be retained. Students can create or access their accounts before August 1 and begin organising basic details.

After the annual refresh, applicants should carefully review every section rather than assuming that all previous information has transferred correctly.

Platforms change. Interfaces change. AI tools become more sophisticated.

But admissions officers are still looking for a real person.

A polished application cannot compensate for weak self-understanding. AI cannot manufacture an authentic growth story, and a convenient application platform cannot replace genuine interest in a university.

For Fall 2027 applicants, the strongest advantage will not be a shortcut. It will be the ability to present a clear, detailed and recognisably personal story.
