Inside Admissions, Part II | What Kind of Students Do St. Paul’s, Milton, Governor’s, and Dana Hall Really Want?

In today’s fiercely competitive U.S. college admissions landscape, even stellar scores like an SAT score of 1570 and IB of 45 no longer guarantee success. What sets applicants apart is not just academic achievement, but the depth of thought, clarity of purpose, and authenticity of narrative. Z’s journey—from multiple Early Decision rejections to receiving offers from Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern, USC, UCL, HKU, and HKUST—is a powerful case study in strategic planning, resilience, and storytelling.
Z always had a strong passion for economics. By 10th grade, he had already set his sights on top UK universities like the G5. Teachers praised his razor-sharp logic and academic rigor—he was the quintessential “young economist.” However, our team at Foundation quickly identified that while his academic thinking was refined, it was overly theoretical and lacked real-world engagement.
Through guided interviews and reflection, we asked him fundamental questions like:
“What do you want to use economics for?”
“Whose lives can you improve through your knowledge?”
A pivotal moment came during the University of Chicago Summer Program, where Z met like-minded students passionate about using economic theory to address real-world issues. For the first time, Z realized economics wasn’t just about models on paper—it could be a tool for social impact.
Upon returning from Chicago, Z launched a student-led nonprofit initiative focused on elderly cardboard collectors in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. With our support, he designed and executed a full-scale community impact project:
This wasn’t just a volunteer effort—it was a rigorous, data-driven public policy case study. With guidance from our team, Z learned to articulate not only what he did, but more importantly, why it mattered and how it transformed both himself and the community.
Instead of showcasing awards or competitions, Z chose to anchor his application narrative in a single, powerful image:
An elderly man bent over with a stack of cardboard at midnight on the streets of Hong Kong.
We helped him build a deeply reflective essay, connecting this scene to structural poverty, economic inequality, and the limits of welfare policies in wealthy urban cities. By drawing on what he had learned in welfare economics and public policy, he proposed practical adjustments to urban benefit systems.
This compelling essay perfectly aligned with the values of schools like Northwestern and Johns Hopkins, which prioritize social structure analysis and civic impact. At JHU, we tailored his positioning as a “socially responsible economist” aligned with the university’s International Studies and Public Policy programs.
Z’s journey was built on discipline and foresight. His IB predicted scores climbed from 43 to a perfect 45. due to engineer-level planning. Working alongside his mother and Foundation mentors, he created a week-by-week application schedule covering:
Even after being rejected by UChicago in ED, Z kept his composure. With our guidance, he revised essays, reprioritized his school list, and launched a strong RD strategy—earning a spot at Northwestern University.
Z also explored multiple tracks:
Z’s journey wasn’t fueled by luck—it was a three-year path of introspection, adaptation, and purpose-driven planning. He transformed rejection into growth, leveraging mentorship and personal reflection to unlock offers from some of the world’s most elite institutions.
As he often says:
“College applications are not a sprint, they’re a marathon.”
At Foundation, we believe elite universities aren’t just for the gifted—they’re for the prepared. Z’s story is proof that with strategic mentorship, authentic purpose, and sustained effort, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
